Almost every masonry chimney that has a woodstove or insert attached to it should have a stainless steel liner installed to ensure the highest degree of safety and efficiency.  Most chimney fires occur in unlined chimneys and even if there is an existing clay or pumice liner these chimneys tend to have excessive creosote buildups and extensive damage after a chimney fire.
